the San Miguel Church

They say that this is the oldest church structure in the United States, built by Mexican Indians under the direction of (Spanish) Franciscan Padres in 1610. I can’t figure out how a Church in Santa Fe can be older than the church in St. Augustine. Isn’t St. Augustine the place where the Spanish first set foot on American soil in the 1500’s? Is the first Spanish Church there not still standing?

It is a very sweet, simple little church with some interesting iconic art.

But I still don't get this "conquistador" stuff ...

  1. Very picturesque. Nice to see how this old adobe church has been lovingly kept up over the centuries. Lots of holiness going down there.

  2. I haven't figured out this "holiness" yet, Barbara ... there's always another motive going on, it seems. Maybe that's the way it is with humanity.

  3. It is just that old churches (like Bonsecours in Montreal) make me think of all the simple, holy people who prayed there over the years. It leaves a special kind of spiritual patina (not to mention the physical kind!).
