up, up and away

Up, up and away.  We are finally on the Southwest Airline flight from Fort Lauderdale to Albuquerque, but I think it is going to stop in Texas (Houston AND Dallas).  Though I know some wonderful people who live in Texas - I’ve even come to see some relative integrity in GWB - I harbor a Thelma and Louise aversion.

It was a beautiful morning in South Florida.  Lots of stars this morning and noticeably cooler.  Jubilee was nervous as we left and I will miss her terribly.  But she will be in good hands with Jonathan B.  Her blindness makes her especially insecure in unfamiliar places.  She knows her way well around our house and backyard and doesn’t seem at all depressed at not being able to see much any more.  Still, it’s hard for me to leave her even for a few days.

Waiting for the bus from extended parking lot in Fort Lauderdale:

Though we’ve been exploring a lot of different places these past few years - Missouri, St. Louis, Illinois, Chicago, Pittsburgh etc. - this feels like the first official vacation that John and I have been on since we went to Germany and Prague in 2007.  For no other reason than the adventure of it, we are going some place we’ve never been to see things we’ve never seen before.  We don’t even know what to expect!

The last time we were in New Mexico was January 1976 when we were traveling from Pasco Washington to Central Virginia (a job change for John).  It was cold and snowing much of the way.  We were just 26 years old, driving a big brown hippie van with a VW beetle attached to the back of that!  Now here we are 63 (well, still 62 for John), making our return trip.

This is the view from the window in Fort Lauderdale:

This is the view from Houston:
These are clouds over Texas:
The land wilded out as we travelled over West Texas.
 ... into New Mexico ...

 Made it to Albuquerque!

It seems that it is the desert that is calling us.
